Milestone Systems have developed the XProtect video management platform from Denmark since 1998, and operate as an independent company within the Canon Group. XProtect now runs across more than 500,000 customer sites worldwide, and supports a wider range of cameras and devices than any rival platform on the market.

The supported device list runs past 16,500 cameras and encoders, which settles most compatibility questions at design stage. We specify the camera that suits the site and the budget. A customer inheriting a mixed estate from several previous contractors can normally retain all of it under one system.

Support for
older equipment

XProtect supports ONVIF Profiles G, S, T and M, and the Milestone universal driver brings in video and audio from devices with no dedicated driver or ONVIF support. Legacy cameras on an inherited site remain usable, which allows an upgrade to be phased over an agreed period.

Remote sites under central management

Milestone Interconnect draws video from remote or intermittently connected sites into a central XProtect system under its own licence model. Depots, substations and satellite offices are managed from one control room, with video retrieved on demand rather than streamed continuously. A full recording server is required only where the site size justifies it.

Specified to actual requirements

XProtect is available in tiers from small single-site systems up to XProtect Corporate, sharing one interface and one set of engineering skills. The same engineering skills apply across every tier, so a system is specified to what the site actually needs at handover. Later expansion is a matter of licences and hardware on the same platform.

A defined upgrade path with years budgeted in advance

Care Plus credits the full original licence price against a later upgrade, and Care Premium provides direct access to Milestone’s own technical support team. Both are purchased as defined annual products, so maintenance costs are known in advance. A customer planning five or ten years ahead can budget upgrade work with reasonable accuracy.

A large integration catalogue documented and tested

The MIP SDK and Milestone Marketplace provide an extensive catalogue of tested, documented integrations spanning analytics, access control, ANPR and business systems. Most specific customer requirements are met by an existing integration, which shortens delivery time and reduces development risk on a project.

A cloud video management option for smaller sites

Milestone Kite provides cloud video management for locations where an on-premise server is not justified. Small branches, remote compounds and temporary sites are brought under central management without local recording hardware or a server cabinet on site. Larger sites continue on XProtect where that remains the appropriate choice.
