LenelS2 develop the OnGuard access control platform, formed in 2018 from the merger of Lenel, established 1991, and S2 Security. Now a Honeywell brand within its Building Automation division, they supply enterprise access control, credentialing and video to large multi-site organisations across government, healthcare, education and corporate estates.

Open Mercury hardware, not a proprietary panel range

OnGuard runs on Mercury controller hardware, an open standard used across several access control brands rather than a proprietary panel range. A customer is not tied to one supplier’s boards for the life of the system, and Mercury panels already installed on an inherited site can usually be brought under OnGuard.

LenelS2's strengths in detail

Open controller hardware supports multiple brands

OnGuard supports Mercury controller hardware, including the M-Series, alongside the LNL-X range. Mercury boards are an open platform used across several access control brands. A site standardised on Mercury retains a choice of head-end software later, and panels installed by a previous contractor can often be adopted rather than stripped out.

No client software
to deploy

OnGuard’s browser clients handle cardholder administration, badge management, access levels, reporting and monitoring without a client installed on each machine. Rolling out a version upgrade across fifty workstations is no longer a project in itself, and reception or HR staff can be given access without a software deployment.

A supported
integration route

LS OpenAccess provides a documented web service API for building integrations into OnGuard, and can be hosted on a server separate from the main application. Where a customer needs a link to a bespoke internal system, there is a supported method rather than an unsupported workaround at database level.

Regions for international estates

OnGuard Enterprise divides a large deployment into regions, each operating locally against its own database and reporting to a master. Sites in different countries continue operating through a WAN outage or a link failure, and custom reports can be copied between regions. Data residency obligations become easier to satisfy across borders.

Single-tenant cloud not shared with other organisations

OnGuard Cloud delivers the same platform as a single-tenant SaaS service on Amazon Web Services, with 24/7 operational monitoring and direct end-user support. Single-tenant is the important detail: the application instance and database are not shared with other organisations, which matters where data segregation has to be demonstrated.

Encryption includes FIPS 201, HSPD-12 and UL listings

Communication between OnGuard and its controllers can be encrypted using TLS certificates, and the platform carries credentials including FIPS 201, HSPD-12 and UL listings for approved hardware combinations. Procurement teams in government, defence and other regulated sectors normally screen against these approvals.
