Leaders in Advanced Security and Surveillance Systems
Control room software and cameras for hostile environments
Synectics began as a surveillance technology R&D house during the growth of UK town centre CCTV in the 1990s, and develop the Synergy command and control platform from Sheffield. Their COEX range adds explosion-proof, marine-grade and thermal cameras alongside conventional IP models for demanding industrial sites.
Why does ATEC partner with Synectics?
One supplier for the platform and the difficult hardware
Synectics supply both the Synergy control room platform and cameras rated for hazardous and marine environments, which places accountability for the whole system with one manufacturer. A customer operating a petrochemical site or a port receives equipment certified for the atmosphere it is installed in.
Synectics' strengths

- Verify every camera on a system within minutes
- Cache to the camera during a network fault
- COEX explosion-proof and marine-grade cameras
- Open ONVIF architecture runs on existing platforms
- Extensive experience in gaming, where surveillance compliance is heavily regulated
Synectics' strengths in detail
Designed for mission critical control rooms
Synergy is built around large, mission-critical control room operations, and Synectics state a 99.99% uptime target for the platform. The architecture assumes continuous 24-hour operation from the outset, and the platform scales from a core installation upwards. Customers running a permanently staffed control room have a platform matched to that pattern of operation.
Scene Check verifies every camera on a system
Scene Check verifies every camera on a system within minutes, confirming each is recording and correctly aimed. Auditing several hundred cameras manually occupies several days of engineering time on a large estate. Faults are identified quickly, and a customer can evidence that the system was operational on a given date.
Recording through a network fault
Intelligent Edge Recording caches video to the camera’s own memory when networked storage is unreachable, and Synergy backfills that footage to the server once the link is restored. The camera’s own SD card is used only for the duration of the fault, so recording continuity is maintained and card replacement across a large estate reduces substantially.
Cameras for hazardous environments
The COEX range covers explosion-proof cameras for hazardous areas and marine-grade units for vessels and offshore platforms, alongside thermal models. Petrochemical sites, ports and refineries require equipment certified for the atmosphere in which it operates. COEX products carry ATEX and equivalent certification for those environments, which is a procurement requirement on most industrial sites of this type.
Runs on existing IT infrastructure
Synergy accepts ONVIF-compliant cameras from any manufacturer and operates on standard enterprise infrastructure, including HP servers, VMware virtualisation and Microsoft SQL. An IT department retains the platforms it already supports. Existing cameras remain in service while a migration is phased across several budget years.
Experience in a regulated sector
Casino and gaming surveillance carries some of the strictest compliance and evidential requirements found in any commercial sector, and Synectics hold an established position in that market. The evidential and audit capabilities developed for gaming apply directly to transport, public space and critical infrastructure projects.
